Known for its leafy streets, spacious parks, and quaint cafes, plus proudly home to one of leading universities in the world, and dotted with storybook heritage homes - Randwick exudes a cosy, yet lively and cosmopolitan vibe. It’s charming, to say the least.
Thanks to the iconic University of New South Wales (UNSW), the suburb attracts a diverse mix of local and international students, professors, and families, and it’s always buzzing with life, even though it also has a peaceful residential air to it.
It’s also the location of The Prince of Wales Hospital - one of the best medical facilities in Australia, and a major public teaching hospital, which just adds to the suburb’s privileges.
Shopping is a breeze with the Royal Randwick Shopping Centre stocked by a diverse mix of over 60 speciality shops, the even bigger Bondi Junction precinct down the road, and the CBD within a few tram/bus stops reach.
When it comes time for rest and relaxation, Randwick doesn’t disappoint. Royal Randwick Racecourse, of course, is famous for its races each year, racing’s premier playground - and has been a centre for sport, culture, fashion and cuisine, and the beating heart of Sydney society since 1833.
Parks are abundant here too, and North Randwick particularly is lucky enough to host the lush greenery of Queens Park, with its stunning, panoramic view of the CBD and Centrepoint Tower. Additionally it’s home and the gateway to the verdant paradise of Centennial Park, perfect for tranquil strolls, bike rides (and bikes are available for hire), and even horse rides – thanks to its three private equestrian ranches. In Sydney these huge parklands are also rightly known as 'the lungs of the city'.
For a taste of the seaside you’re also perfectly placed here. Grab a quick scenic bus trip to the famous Bondi Beach, or your choice of some of the other best, beautiful and well-known sandy shores and waves in the Eastern suburbs - such as Bronte, Coogee, Clovelly and Maroubra - there’s plenty to choose from.
The bonuses don’t end there though, Randwick is a gorgeous enclave with plenty of perks. Sydney's newest must-visit dining destination ‘Newmarket’ combines heritage, open spaces and highly curated retailers in one of the city’s most sought-after suburbs, and also boasts a range of cuisines, restaurants, wine bars & modern cafes near the hospital.
However, for those who like their coffee and nice meal, there are an array of spots to choose from - and you’ll find some of the cutest and top selections at The Spot.
This heritage conservation area, around the intersection of Perouse Road and St Pauls Street, is the place to be in Randwick, where many locals congregate - and whether it’s day or night, you’ll always find somewhere to cosy up at here and enjoy the moment.
This special spot even has its own festival - a multicultural celebration of culture, food, live music and entertainment with plenty of stallholders, free kids activities, and performances - now a favourite event in the Eastern Suburbs circuit. Not surprisingly, this fiesta has also taken the trophy as Randwick's biggest free outdoor party, held in March each year.
If that wasn’t enough, The Spot in Randwick is also the setting for the classic and now Heritage-listed Ritz Cinemas - sparkling by name, and even more dazzling as an experience - it’s a real treat. But more on that later.
Enjoy our curated list of what the residents here love best in this delightful nook of a neighbourhood.

To say there are places to grab a bite in Randwick would be a colossal understatement. That makes it hard to choose where, when, and how many times. Dont't worry, we've narrowed it down to our favourites... and some of the local secrets too.
As the name might suggest, this place is a little off-beat, yet super cool. It’s a zero-waste focused cafe on the corner of Clovelly Road, and a lovely little neighbourhood favourite in North Randwick.
Recognisable by its white-washed walls, colourful stools outside, and the wooden benches underneath its familiar frangipani tree, this is a community-minded cafe, and has been since the get-go.
Here you’ll swing by to find resident families, joggers fresh from their workouts, and remote workers with their laptops enjoying the sunshine and the fresh, organic products and specialty coffees it serves up daily (until 2pm). Sustainability is the name of the game here, so you’ll also see many locals often bringing their own cup/s or choosing from one of the ones in the basket on the counter – eco-friendliness, and no waste is encouraged.
While it looks minimal in decor, with its white-washed meets scarlet-rose brick walls, neighbourhood eatery Clove Lane is anything but simple in its culinary background. Created by chef-owner Emile Avramides (think Little Jean’s, Gordon Ramsay’s Maze, Cutler & Co), ingredients come from suppliers like De Costi Seafood and Chef’s Co-Op, and the experience here is always 5-star.
Yet, somehow, you’ll always feel at home here in this gem of a restaurant, which offers seasonally driven, dynamic menus, and specialises in meals to share.
As they say – “the more memorable feasts are held around the family table, where one is free to sit back, immersed completely in both the cuisine and setting” – and that’s exactly what they offer in this crisp, modern bistro.
P.S: There’s a beautiful back-roofed deck with wooden floorboards, some greenery and fairy lights, which is the perfect place to eat, and is also semi-private if you’re looking for somewhere to hire for a little function.
This popular cafe, situated just across the road from not just the Prince of Wales Hospital, but also the Randwick tram stop, and within a couple of minutes walking distance from the Royal Randwick shopping hub, is really right in the thick of it.
Because of its star location, it’s a chic local favourite – the place where plenty of residents, passers by, doctors and nurses check in to stop for delicious coffee, fresh sandwiches, soups, salads, and juices, and a great place to unwind – if you can score yourself a spot. It is always, always busy. Worth it if you can get in, because it’s beloved for a reason – but be warned, that’ll be a real triumph.
Takeaway is our suggestion… unless of course, you see a chair and table in the distance. In that case – order, squeeze through the crowds, and run. Then, once seated – sit back, take a breath, and enjoy your score.
Just next door from High St Society, you’ve got the smaller (but just as busy) Baked by 22 Grams.
Here, they roast their own coffee, and bake everything in house. We’re talking best coffee/food/pastries/bread, and they do it with care.
Their chicken and eggs are free-range, and the fruit and veggies are locally grown where possible. Everything is delicious, and the ambience is bustling, but friendly, and as local as it gets. Again, you’ll find locals, and of course, hardworking hospital staff popping in on the regular; and the barista will often know them all by name.
This place started small, but it’s now a neighbourhood favourite with a reputation, and a great one at that.
Once upon a time, Peter Bozikis – owner and head pastry chef of Randwick’s The Sweet Spot Patisserie – came across a fading black and white photograph. In that snapshot, he saw inspiration for what would become a much-loved Randwick institution, his first business with wife Angela – and the revival of a uniquely European tradition. Little did he know it would also become such a raging success, and the spot (in The Spot) for a sweet treat, anytime of day.
As the story goes: 'The crinkled photo of the old patisserie shopfront, from the Bozikis family’s home island of Zakynthos Greece, framed a scene common to the region. Groups of men sipping their coffee’s outside the little shop, talking and catching up while sampling sweets they would later buy more of to take home to their families.'
Inspired by nostalgia, and armed with nearly 20 years experience in the industry, the Bozikis couple decided to create a European-inspired patisserie that would provide Randwick with both modern and traditional sweets, and brought their dream to life. Years later, The Sweet Spot is still providing that perfect corner where customers can, not only enjoy the comfort at the shop with a great coffee or tea, pastry or traditional greek dessert, but also take home a delicacy for the family to share, if they wish.
Since opening its doors on August the 10th, 2007, it’s become Randwick’s favoured patisserie, a communal meeting point among friends who want to catch up, or just a place to relax after a long day when you need a shot of sugar.
Because at the end of the day, as they say: “Everyone has a sweet spot”.
Boasting three locations in Sydney already, anyone from the city will probably already know the name – but for those who don’t, Bake Bar is a famous hangout, with this one in particular claiming a prime location on Frenchmans Road in Randwick.
Open everyday, this place serves up breakfast, brunch, and lunch from delicious organic and local produce, plus artisan breads and baked goods made fresh everyday – and the bustling ambience here is hard not to love.
It’s a popular spot for all the locals in Randwick, and you’ll find a mix of characters here, chatting away, and enjoying their eggs, delicious pies, selection of simple, fresh sandwiches, simple dishes, or even soups on the menu; and many with their dogs – the furry friends are allowed to join beside their owners on the outside tables.
Visit a few times and you’ll find that the baristas might also start calling you by name, and most of the regulars here are friends with them already, and they'll often be found discussing the day’s happenings together on a daily basis.
If you’re looking for a place that encapsulates the local vibe – head to The Dog Hotel – one of the gems of the Merivale dynasty of spots to eat & chill.
Formerly the Duke of Gloucester Hotel, this rustic building has now been revived with a hip, refurbished interior, complete with an awesome, breezy balcony where you can hang out with a drink or some nachos, any season – it’s heated when winter knocks.
This is a laid-back place to chill out and meet with friends, surrounded by a cool vibe, and where you can just catch-up and/or watch some live sport, enjoying a beer with some hearty pub grub. A modern gastro pub done well.
As you might have guessed, this pub is also dog friendly, and furry buddies are always welcome to join with patrons as long as they’re on a leash, and stay within the partly covered beer garden. Just another plus of this resident favourite.
If you’re looking for fresh, homemade pasta in a light, airy setting for lunch – you’ve found it here.
Daily handmade focaccia, pasta, and stuffed gnocchi is all on the menu, and all dietary requirements are catered to – meat lovers, gluten intolerant, vegetarians and the vegans alike – this place has it all when you want that Italian hit. Never fear; delivery and takeaway is also part of the package at Spagetteria, so all those with a busy schedule don’t miss out.
You’ll also see seasonal changes grace the menu on occasion – like fresh zucchini pasta bases in summer, for those after something a little lighter on those hot scorching days, for example – so there’s always something new to try too.
Just look for the blue awning, the bright orange and turquoise chairs, and the huge ‘Keep Smiling, Eat Pasta’ sign, and you’re there.
Any time you talk about restaurants in Randwick, Baccomatto Osteria is undoubtably on the list.
After relocating from its Surry Hills HQ to Randwick's Newmarket hub, this stylish spot for upscale Italian dishes has become the place to enjoy a fine dining experience in a trendy, modern setting.
Offering a much talked-about menu, divided into antipasti, pizza, pasta, and secondi, it’s clear the owners Mauro Marcucci and Michael Stevens know what they’re doing – after all they are veterans of Australia’s Italian food scene. Marcucci himself has been in the industry for 30 years, with a CV that includes time at restaurants such as Sydney’s Enopizzeria, Italian Street Kitchen, Mille Vini, Pizza e Birra, and Termini; as well as Melbourne’s iconic Caffe e Cucina.
While the mood lighting upon warm timber furnishings, and its grey muted walls give off a sophisticated, contemporary vibe, the inspiration itself for the restaurant’s offerings is Rome. This is made obvious by some of the menu favourites, like the much-loved pasta all'Amatriciana, hailing from the ancient town of Amatrice in the hills above Rome; and the Roman-style “pizza a taglio” – sold by weight or slice.
Surrounded by a hospital, UNSW, and three schools, the idea here is that workers will be able to whip out to Baccomatto at lunchtime for a quick slab of pizza, and then they and/or local families will also be able to return later on for a relaxed dinner, featuring aperitivi and Roman-inspired pasta.
Essentially, this spot offers the best of both worlds, in chic and sophisticated space in Randwick – particularly perfect for groups or date night. Buon appetito!
Within the same buzzing Newmarket precinct you’ll also find RaRa Ramen Randwick, a favourite for ramen at its best.
Here you’ll experience authentic traditional bowls of noodles, reminiscent of what you would find when exploring the culinary streets of Japan, with the signature Tonkotsu, Chicken and Vegan broths made by a fantastic team of trained chefs. The same talented cooks craft the Hakata style noodles, and you can often sneak a peek at these well-trained noodle masters working their craft with a state of the art noodle machine – which has been shipped from Japan especially for Newmarket.
Hearty, wholesome, and a cultural experience right here in Randwick, it’s a resident regular.
Argentina meets Italy in this family-owned beauty of a restaurant.
Owned by a family hailing from Argentina with Italian roots, you’ll feel at home as soon as you step in, thanks to its warm atmosphere which is both lively and enjoyable.
The menu is extensive, but they do it all well – so whether you’re craving wood-fired pizza, hearty pasta, fresh seafood, a great steak, veal, chicken, or a veggie risotto, they’ve got it – and you just know it’ll be delicious. Plus there are gluten-free, vegetarian or vegan options.
There are also specials, like the Italian classic Osso Bucco; but if you really want to indulge, go for ‘Mammas’ king prawn pasta; or the classic ’Tartufo’ – fresh homemade tagliatelle with wild mushrooms and black truffles, cooked in a cream based sauce. Paired with one of the delectable wines on their varied list, you can’t go wrong.
It’s authentic, traditional, and just yum, all rolled into one. Essentially, the aim here at Mammas & Papas is to keep the guests delighted and coming back for more – and they do that all without fail, time after time.
Known for its romantic ambience, authentic Italian dishes, and unmissable decor (*yes, you can clearly spot it if you’re driving by in the evening, thanks to its fusion of pink, violet and blue mood lighting - and in the day, given its gorgeous floral decor all over the restaurant); this is food, with love.
Intimate, yet warm, cosy, and inviting, this beautiful restaurant promises a truly memorable dining experience, complete with delectable cuisine and great wines (many from the idyllic north of Italy). Dolce Fiori's even got its own Martini bar where you can sit back and sip a cocktail before or after your meal, while taking in the exquisite surroundings.
Perfect for Valentines Day, of course… or any other day of the week you’re feeling amore.
For daily-dining, Sunday drinking, and perhaps even a little day-dreaming of your next adventure to Mediterranean shores, head to Maybe Frank Randwick – a traditional Italian woodfire pizzeria with an effortlessly cool cocktail bar.
The sister of the original Maybe Frank in Surry Hills – this one focuses more on its diverse drinks menu, which ranges from classic Italian cocktails like Negroni's and spritzes, to weekly specials thought-up by its amazing and extremely talented bartenders. It’s also busier than its predecessor – but that just adds to the lively, buzzing ambience.
That’s what you get when you mix classic, crusty pizzas, incredible cocktails (of which some can be bottled - yep, you heard that right), antipasti, desserts, wines and beers, that are accessible and easy going.
Our tip? If you happen to be around on a breezy summer’s day, then head on outside to the terrace-style backyard to enjoy your chosen beverage, lay back, and unwind.
It’s not as scary as it sounds. But be warned – you will be greeted by exposed-brick walls, a few fake cobwebs and spiders... and antler chandeliers.
Inspired by the film ‘Fear and Loathing’ in Las Vegas – a 1998 American adventure comedy-drama film adapted from journo Hunter S. Thompson – this place promises global recipes and cocktails in a convivial haunt, and with all the quirk and cool vibe expected of a hip neighbourhood hangout.
The bar serves breakfast, drinks and soul food, all well done – and trading from 6:30am to midnight, seven days a week, they pride themselves on creating a unique atmosphere and being a local icon.
Somewhere along the line (and just above the bar) you’ll also be confronted by the champion cock-fighting rooster from the film adaptation of Thompson's story about a journalist struggling to save his soul and find his voice. It’s just all part of the experience.
On your way out, you may or may not be reminded of what the bar’s namesake ‘gonzo’ journalist once said: “Maybe it meant something. Maybe not, in the long run, but no explanation, no mix of words or music or memories can touch that sense of knowing that you were there and alive in that corner of time and the world. Whatever it meant.” ― Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
If you’ve ever been to Bacelona and you’re missing that vibrant buzz, or you’d like to go and just haven’t quite arrived yet – check out this place, grab yourself some tantalising tapas, a wine, and be transported.
Inspired by one of Europe's trendiest cities, and its mouth-watering cuisine by the Mediterranean sea, Del Punto is one of the best places to savour a social ritual synonymous with Spanish culture.
Whether its Gambas al ajillo – seafood with a twist with juicy pan fried prawns, garlic, olive oil &a hint of chilli & parsley; Patatas Del Punto, with its crispy cubes of potato & sweet potato in a creamy aioli bravas sauce; or the classic Empanadillas – golden parcels of 14 hour slow-cooked beef brisket, with caramelised onion, served w/ jalapeno feta dipping sauce – there’s a bit of everything to choose from, and more.
If you’re feeling extra hungry, or arrive in a group, and you’re after more than just a bite, then switch to the site’s more decadent feasting set menus – or its signature paella dish, an iconic Spanish classic, and Del Punto’s specialty too. Made to order with seafood, chicken pinchos, and chorizo, this famous saffron infused rice dish is a super-tasty, traditional Spanish recipe. Definitely worth a try – but be warned it comes fully loaded!
A note: Paella finds it’s perfect match in Tempranillo, a light-bodied red wine that just works with the rich, spicy flavours of chorizo and chicken… but there’s always also Sangria, other wines, beers and ciders to choose from – or something from the bar’s extensive cocktail list. Del Punto is particularly famous for its Margaritas, a local favourite after a long day, or a leisurely stroll exploring the beauty of Randwick’s leafy streets.
Perfect for date nights, meetings with friends, big celebrations, plus everything in between.. and don’t miss the Churros with chocolate. They’re a must, so just try to fit them in.
Since this spot is also perfectly placed just across he road from the famous Ritz Cinemas, they also offer a ‘Dinner & Movie’ special where one free movie ticket is included with the meal – as long as there’s a minimum of two people on the table.
Once you've had your fill, you'll want to walk it off, to somewhere cool and relaxed. These are our picks.
This gorgeous Art Deco-era cinema is not just beautiful to look at, and perfect for a bit of a fancy night out - but it’s become an institution in Randwick, and an iconic landmark at The Spot.
Designed by Crimean-born architect Aaron Bolot and brought to life in 1937 by C. & B. J. Williams, this picture palace specialises in quality mainstream and arthouse films, new releases, and retrospectives - and it really gives you the feel of stepping back into time, with all the magic.
Wander upstairs and you’ll also find a beautiful little bar, complete with a terrace where you can enjoy a glass of wine and a few appetisers before your film.
The best bit? There are also special movie nights every week with featured films at unbeatable prices. Plus - it’s family owned and independent. Sold!
From humble beginnings in 1988, this gorgeous store on a cute little corner in Randwick, just behind the Royal Randwick shopping hub, has grown in reputation around the suburb – although not in size.
That’s the way owner Paula Pellegrini likes it – and it’s really all the space she needs; because as you walk into her world, stocked with a colourful collection of her favourite things, you’ll see that she’s somehow managed to fit everything in, and more.
A cosy independent homewares and gift store, Humble Beginnings has been thoughtfully curated to reflect a lifestyle inspired by travel, creativity and entertaining, and it showcases the best of local Australian makers, as well as international artisans and crafts.
This place has it all. From an array of unique textiles and furnishings for your home – sourced from all over the world – to resin tableware and woven baskets accompanying Indian block prints, woollen blankets, cushions, napkins and tablecloths; and even beautiful paintings by rare Australian artists.
Furniture, homewares, art, jewellery, ceramics, books, candles, stationery, and even gifts for little ones, join the handpicked choices, and they all unite in a joyful medley of crafts and goods selected by Pellegrini herself.
This place has become a signature gem in Randwick, regularly visited by the locals when they’re looking for a special something – or even just to pop in and say hi, and have a meander through the collection on a lazy day, and especially when they’ve got time on their hands to dream.
Essentially, this tiny, but beautiful, and historic boutique has now become an icon; and worth a look in, no matter what you’re after. Chances are, you might come across something unique which you weren’t even looking for…
