Potts Point Vibes: The Locals Guide to Sydney's Hipster Haven

Once known as Sydney’s Woolloomooloo hill, and one of Sydney’s oldest neighbourhoods, the reinvigorated Potts Point is now one of the city’s trendiest suburbs and definitely one to explore.

Originally the home of wealthy landowners, such as its namesake Joseph Potts, it’s still also a popular spot for the rich and famous, so whilst walking these streets you might often bump into a celebrity, or five.

This is a place where avant-garde elegance and modern vibrancy combine to form a chic fusion of beautiful Art Deco buildings and architecture, with a hint of bohemian flair, in a seamless blend of old-world charm and edgy sophistication.

By day it’s buzzing - and cool, cosy cafes beckon, with myriad interesting boutiques and op shops to browse, inviting leisurely strolls.

This unique hub packs a punch, and it’s small, yet densely populated. Bound by its main vein, Macleay Street, backed by Victoria Street which branches out to Kings Cross train station, with Darlinghurst Road to the southeast, William Street to the south, and Brougham Street to the west, its roughly trapezoidal shape makes it the perfect size for a relaxing walk around, allowing locals and visitors to soak in its rich history and contemporary allure.

Once the sun sets, the area transforms into a spirited nightlife hub, lit by the lights of Kings Cross and and pulsating with the energy of the suburb’s eclectic crowd. Picture this – a series of large, brightly-coloured starbursts illuminating the night sky, inspired by the iconic El Alamein Fountain nearby. That’s Llankelly Place, a modest but bustling laneway, and not just any lane; it’s a beloved Kings Cross landmark. To add to its allure, the lights are an architectural masterpiece by Peter McGregor, who has transformed it from what was once a dark, narrow passage into a welcoming pedestrian walkway.

Walk through admiring the rainbow and the lane then meets the small oasis of Springfield Gardens at Orwell Street. It’s a visual feast that makes every step a part of the adventure.

Convenience is a given here, and few suburbs in Sydney can match Potts Point for its easy and central location, just 15-minutes from the CBD centre and close to the Eastern suburbs sandy beaches. It boasts some of the city’s best public transport links, and streets filled with late-night corner stores, supermarkets, and drycleaning services, all which add to its cosmopolitan lifestyle and keep its inner-urban village community happy.

Potts Points sits on a ridge immediately east of Woolloomooloo, west of Elizabeth Bay and Rushcutters Bay, north of Darlinghurst, and just walking distance to Hyde Park, so it’s essentially the heart of city living.

There’s much more to see within its streets though. A treasure trove of culinary delights, cultural attractions, and vibrant hotspots where you can enjoy the vibe, here are just some of the gems on offer to check out during your stay.

Piña

Just across the laneway in Llanklley Place, is Piña – Room Ten's hipster sister cafe – and another option for your morning jumpstart. Truth be told, you might have to wait a bit for your fill here, since its also the favourite of celebrity chefs such as Neil Perry and “Big” Sam Young among others – but it’s well worth the wait.

Here customers can choose from breakfast and lunch classics, all with a touch of class, and the spot attracts a crowd from early morning to late afternoon. Set up in its a bar overlooking the laneway for a Mecca coffee, or in one of the covered seating spots in the alleyway, and feast on plates such as chilli scrambled eggs, sourdough pancakes, or its killer chicken sandwich. Also, don't forget to try the spicy corn ribs and smoked ocean trout.

The perfect place to enjoy a relaxed meal, surrounded by the vibrant energy of Potts Point.

Great coffee can be paired with freshly-made eclairs (*get in quick, because they do sell-out on a daily basis), and traditional favourites such as galettes and crunchy baguettes are there for the tasting, along with delicious crepes for dessert.

You’ll find yourself likely staying longer than you expected here at Café de la Fontaine, just for the cosy ambience. The food menu is simple but delicious, featuring hot dogs, toasted sandwiches, and gourmet canned treats.

Whether you’re a longtime Sydneysider or a first-time visitor, Piccolo Bar’s charm and character are sure to leave a lasting impression.
