Exploring Wānaka: Where to Go in New Zealand's Trendy Alpine Resort Town

Picturesque and perched on the southern edge of its namesake lake, Wānaka beckons with its charm and stunning natural beauty, making it the ultimate playground for adventurers and relaxation-seekers alike.

This lively alpine town is perfectly positioned as a gateway to the Southern Alps and Mount Aspiring National Park, offering an array of both outdoor and indoor activities amidst breathtaking scenery – no matter the season.

Spring, however – or Kōaka – which runs from the beginning of September to the end of November, is one of the most beautiful times within which to explore this stunning destination, and it offers a variety of things to do and locations to explore.

The snow fields, of course, are always a huge drawcard here – with wide open ski trails, challenging steeps, parks and pipes‚ backcountry heli trips and over 50km of cross country trails ready for discovery, and actually four different ski fields within 40 minutes from Wānaka town.

Cardrona Alpine Resort, Treble Cone, the Snow Farm, and Soho Basin are the most popular, and another two ski fields located closer to Queenstown, and just over an hour’s drive away: Coronet Peak, and The Remarkables. Accessible from Wanaka and easily reached on a day trip, these six ski fields are a breeze to get to from Wanaka, so they’re always a top choice for snow bunnies – and spring means typically warmer temperatures, extended daylight, and less crowded slopes – a bonus.

For those looking for something a little different, the warmer weather means there are always also exhilarating skydiving and canyoning, hiking or bike riding to discover the exquisite fauna and flora popping up all over the region, or the crystal-clear water of the lakes and rivers around, for tranquil cruises, kayaking, fishing, or even jet-boating… and there are always also those scenic flights over glaciers, sure to be a top memorable moment for anyone lucky enough to experience it.

Wānaka is also known for its word-class events like the Warbirds over Wānaka air show, the Rhythm & Alps music festival, the Festival of Colour or Challenge Wānaka, the world’s most scenic long-distance triathlon, so it’s a dynamic place to visit – and when the town isn’t booming with energy from a festival, there’s the local Wanaka Farmer's Market, held every Thursday from 3-6pm. One of only a handful of markets in New Zealand that runs year-round, it’s the best place to try some of the region’s best produce, which is definitely worth a try.

Wānaka is renowned for its vibrant food and wine scene, and you can also, of course, savour some of its exceptional local cuisine, and sample award-winning wines, beers, spirits, bread, ice cream, and artisanal treats at its pretty lakefront bars, cafes, and restaurants – below are just some of our favourites.

But whether you're drawn by the promise of thrilling outdoor escapades or the allure of gourmet delights and local festivals, Wānaka is a destination that captivates and delights year-round – with a few charming and unique boutique stays also in the vicinity that are on Locay’s list.

Bordered by National Parks, mountains and Lake Wānaka, Minaret Station is one of the most secluded and private luxury lodges in the world – and, as there are no roads at all leading to Minaret Station, access is only possible by helicopter.
