Power play: The Rejuvenation of a Former Tasmanian Power Station, Pumphouse Point

The southern hemisphere's deepest lake has us diving in to experience an unmatched adults only accommodation experience.

Pumphouse Point is a remote and secluded destination that offers an entirely unique wilderness experience, making it a significant addition to Australia's hospitality landscape.

In fact, the team at Locay finds it difficult to encounter another experience comparable to that of a stay at Pumphouse Point. The branding, concept, level of comfort, and delivery of this establishment are flawlessly executed from the moment of booking until departure.

Set in a magnificent industrial 1930s pump house surrounded by century-old forests, the raw and rugged landscape provides the ideal backdrop for those seeking calm, reconnection, and a sense of awe.

The 19 boutique rooms and suites have been thoughtfully created to blend luxe accommodations with the breathtaking views of the Southern Hemisphere's deepest lake. Guests can glide away on e-bikes or rowboats, indulge in honesty bars and roaring fire feasts, pack picnics from all-inclusive larders, or unwind with a highland massage. It's no wonder why Pumphouse Point has been crowned one of Australia's best boutique accommodations, with its impressive combination of natural beauty and hospitality.

Upon arrival, enjoy a scenic 10-minute drive down an unsealed road sets the stage for an unforgettable stay. However, don't be fooled by this unassuming exterior. Behind heavy timber gates lies a warm and welcoming homestead, where a friendly team awaits to make you feel right at home. The level of service is casual and familiar with value placed on not just where you're from, but also what lies ahead.

Parking is conveniently available free of charge for all self-drive guests.

Pumphouse Point accommodation is housed in two converted power station buildings, showcasing solid foundations, industrial touches, and sleek bathrooms. The two iconic industrial buildings, once operating as a Hydro-Electric station, quietly gaze at one another; “The Pumphouse”, over the water, and “The Shorehouse”, over the land. Each building boasts a stylish communal lounge, where you can relax and enjoy panoramic views of Lake St. Clare. Each lounge features a fully stocked help-yourself bar, cozy wood fires, nostalgic reading materials, games and of course, breathtaking views.

Being remote means that the properties culinary offering needs to be as impressive as the stunning highland landscape that surrounds Pumphouse Point. No need to sweat, it is.

Wake up to the delicious scent of a hearty breakfast made with fresh local Tasmanian ingredients. Each guest suite is stocked with a delightful selection of locally-sourced cheese and provisions, perfect for packing a picnic for your day's adventure. And yes, it's true. You can have freshly baked sourdough bread delivered to your room at any time you choose.

However, one of the real highlights of your stay at Pumphouse Point is the dinners. Gather with fellow guests in the dimly lit, modern dining room known as The Shorehouse. At first the social concept seems a little daunting but it easily is the highlight so many guests often talk of well after their stay. Picture sleek timbers, minimalist furnishings, industrial lighting, and cozy fireplaces. During the cooler months, you'll be greeted with the days aromatic batch of mulled wine or explore the cellar for the perfect evening drop.

Amidst the clinking of glasses and lively conversation, you'll be served a seasonal three-course set menu each evening of stay. Indulge in nourishing soups, roasted and braised meats, fresh vegetables, and decadent desserts. It's an experience that's hard to put into words, but one that will leave you feeling both satisfied and impressed with the quality and service put on by the kitchen crew.
